It’s The Content of Our Character

Recently, I’ve heard a lot about political candidates on the Republican/Conservative side by mainstream media.  Some concerns have been legitimate.  Most though have not been.  The questioning of people’s education really bugs me.  OK, I have a BS in Business Administration from the University of Florida and a MBA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte…………..And that doesn’t do a darned thing for you or for anybody.  I received those degrees back in 1983 and 1989 respectively.  And their benefit to an employer (or electorate) lasted only a short period of time.  My value to people today is based on what I have done lately or what I can do now or in the future.  You’ll work with me today because my product is great or because my pitch is great (I hope both.)

So why did the media make a big deal out of Karen Handel’s lack of a college degree in her Republican primary run for Governor of Georgia?  Who else doesn’t have a degree?  Here are a few:

  • Sean Hannity
  • Glenn Beck
  • Rush LImbaugh
  • Michael Dell (Dell Computer)
  • Bill Gates (Microsoft)
  • Steve Jobs (Apple)
  • Henry Ford
  • Steven Spielberg
  • Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook)
  • Andrew Jackson (President of US)
  • Mark Twain
  • George Washington
  • Harry Truman

There’s one person without a degree I like.  Jeff Foxworthy.  He’s a Georgia Tech dropout.  After leaving Tech he worked as an IBM technician.  Then in the mid-80’s he entered and won a stand-up comedy contest.  The rest is history.  He’s become wildly successful.  And he’s now built a well known private school in Alpharetta, GA.

Don’t listen to the media.  There are great people out there who may not have earned letters from a university.  But, they may have earned them in other ways.  Or perhaps their talent by itself is worthy of consideration by itself.
